The Best and Only Real way to Break Habits

What is a Habit?

hab·it

Noun
A settled or regular tendency or practice, esp. one that is hard to give up.

Habits have three parts. The first part is a queue. This is like a trigger that initiates the habit. The second part is routine. This is the actual habit. The third part is the reward. This is whatever you gain from participating in the habit. To break these habits you must focus on the main components. The main components are steps 1 and 3. These steps shape what the routine is.

How to break it

There are two steps to breaking a habit. The first step is to place something in front of you that gives initiative. For instance, if I was trying to stop smoking, I would replace my cigarette packs with gum. The second step is to then chew that gum instead of smoking. The third step is rewarding yourself for following through. This can something as simple as a piece of chocolate.

Key

The key to following this plan and breaking your habit is to divide up your habit into it's three parts. Then replace the first part with something that will initiate you do what you want. Then replace the second step with what you want to be doing instead. And finally give yourself a small reward for completing the first two steps.

Starting a New Habit

The same thing applies if you just want to start a new habit. Divide it into it's three parts. Then make sure you put in what you need to be doing for the first two steps. If you follow through on the first two steps give yourself a small reward.

Conclusion

After you break you habit please share the experience with others in the comments. Good luck!
