Tripod vs. Steadicam

I recently wrote an article on the best piece of filming equipment. In that article I said that a steadicam was the best piece of filming equipment, but people were making an argument for tripods. In this article I'll compare the two and you can make the decision. Let me know in the comments what you decide.

Tripods

Okay when you get a tripod your getting something that you can just set  your camera on and then be in your film. It's super good for low involvment projects. You can also pan and tilt with a tripod. Giving you two motions that will make your shots more interesting. You can also turn your tripod into a makeshift steadicam. It's not excactly the same thing, but it works. Watch this episode of FilmRiot for more information. Another that you can do with a tripod is use it as a small crane.

Steadicams

A steadicam is a great way to get smooth, quick, dolly like, and professional looking shots. So if your a run and gun type of person this is a huge plus. Second you can use the steadicam as a tripod by either holding it, or putting it on a table and extending the bottom pole. Third the steadicam can be used as a slider. Four the steadicam can be used as  a crane. You can also tilt and pan with the steadicam. The only con of the steadicam is that you need someone operating at almost all times.

               Tripod                                                              Steadicam

1. Steady shots                                                Steady Shots (Kinda)
 2. Pan and Tilt                                                  Pan and Tilt
3. Tracking Shots (Kinda)                               Tracking Shots
4. Crane Shots                                                 Crane Shots
5.                                                                         Slider or Dolly Shots
6. Great for low involment shoots                 Great for run and gun

Conclusion

So in my opinion the steadicam is still the better choice, but the Tripod does put up a fight. Especially if you have only a small group of people for you film/ video. Click here for a quick review of a cheap sturdy and well built steadycam.

I hope this helped! Please share this with anybody you think this will benefit. Leave a comment(s) with any questions.

  1. This is such a great resource that you are providing and you give it away for free. I love seeing websites that understand the value of providing a quality resource for free. It is the old what goes around comes around routine.
